Transferring
This has been one of the best weeks ever for me. I took my comp test and scored an 84 (w00t), received my ‘written’ orders, and figured out my transfer date. My written orders are as follows:
- Detach CSCS Great Lakes, IL 21Aug09 (I go on leave for 7 days)
- Report no later than (NLT) 30Aug09, and no early than (net) 29Aug09 to CSCS Norfolk, VA
- Attend 017 days of COMSEC MAIN TECH (NEC: 1460)
- Detach CSCS Norfolk, VA 18Sep09
- Report NTL 27Sep09 and NET 26Sep09 to STU CID Dam Neck, VA
- Attend 082 days of ISM (NEC: 1678)
- Detach STU CID Dam Neck, VA 23Dec09 (This is when I expect I’ll have the opportunity to come home for Holiday Leave)
- Report NTL 03Jan10 and NET 02Jan10 to CSCS Dam Neck, VA
- Attend 039 days of Naval Station Mayport, FL to the USS Klakring (FFG-42)
It seems complicated, I know but I’ll explain a little. Detaching is exactly what the dictionary states: leaving. When I leave here (CSCS Great Lakes, IL) I will be leaving 7 days prior to me having to report to my first ‘C’ school: COMSEC MAIN TECH. This provides me 7 days of leave, which I’ll be routing my ticket from O’Hare to Cleveland Hopkins, then down to Norfolk. Most orders have a NTL and NET, which means I can’t show up at the front gate any earlier or later than the provided dates (duh). I have three ‘C’ schools altogether: COMSEC MAIN TECH (NEC: 1460), ISM (NEC: 1678), AN/WSN-7(v) (NEC: 9612). COMSEC MAIN TECH is in Norfolk, ISM and AN/WSN-7(v) are both located in Dam Neck (which is about 30 minutes inland from Norfolk). When all my schools are done I will be reporting to Naval Station Mayport, Fl to the USS Klakring (FFG-42) until 1403 (March of 2014), so essentially all of my current contract. My primary NEC (job) will be AN/WSN-7(v), which is the ship’s Inertial Navigation System machine (INS), and without it the ship is just a floating chunk of steel.
Getting stationed on the east coast and having a small ship were both of my dreams, after I found out what exactly my job was they turned out to be even better than I imagined. Altogether I’ll have almost 19 months in school thanks to the Navy, and based on what I’ve been able to gather about my ship I’ll be traveling to all the areas that I enlisted to see! Its an amazing feeling to know that I’ve gone through one of the hardest schools that the Navy has to offer and received my rate through all the headaches, long nights, and boring lectures. On top of all that, I’ll also be a reasonably important aspect to my ship which I suppose wil some day give me a bit of bragging rights.
