Anacostia Islands and Karmic Koala

Being on I-264 by 1000, I could tell the weekend was gonna be quite chill. I made awesome time into D.C. and of course ran into a bit of traffic getting into Capitol Hill, but I did manage to land a pretty nice parking spot right in front of Matt’s apartment (which is apparently unheard). We had a bit of kluski and headed on foot towards the Anacostia Islands for a bit of a hike before the park closed. Apparently we ran past the closing-time for the park (what the hell is the meaning of a 1730 closing time?) and ended up having to break out of the park, imagine that! Other than the horrible rain D.C. managed Saturday, the rest of the weekend went swell, including all the yuppies at Jimmy T’s and their incessant yapping,

From word of a friend I learned about Ubuntu’s newest release, Karmic Koala (9.10). Spent all last night downloading packages and running the upgrade, look here if you really aren’t linux-friendly, and playing around with the installation. I can honestly say its even more so aesthetically pleasing than Jaunty is, and there are little things here and there that just pin-point the detail the developers at Ubuntu really pay attention to. The boot and splash screens are really neat, but unfortunately the system boots up too quick now and you hardly get to see them :P

Piedmont Hike

Thanks to Columbus getting credited with discovering America, all government workers were given a nice hefty three-day long weekend. Given the opportunity I took the 4-hour journey up to the highest-used bandwidth spot on Capitol Hill, complete with all my hiking gear and the soundboards for Widespread Panic’s Portsmouth, VA tour (that I unfortunately had to skip out on due to a huge lack in funds – you can grab the same soundboard I got too). I got in relatively late, so we just sat back, relaxed, and enjoyed some beef stew and Napoleon Dynamite (I love technology :D ) and just shot what was there to shoot.
Sunday we headed up to Maryland to the Gunpowder Falls State Park to make an attempt at the Gunpowder South Trail past the unmaintained zone (after the park’s boundaries and into the resevoir’s) to the Prettyboy Dam (Prettyboy Resevoir Shots – not mine but still worth a look). Unfortunately we did let time slip (well, matt took longer than usual finding which dead show was appropriate to jam to) and rushed out to the park as quickly as we could to try and tackle the hike out to the dam – or at least as close as possible. We did manage to make it pretty close to the dam but with the sunlight quickly fading away and still having to return on the same path we relaxed for a quick snack and headed back before the last of the sun gave way to the stars (and a few planets). Today we ate the local Salvadoran restaurant by the Eastern Market (where they sell the most chronic Limeades ever, by the way) before heading back to the pad to get two more shows on a disc that I actually just ripped onto my ipod.
All in all, highly successful (and still pretty sore) weekend. Hell, even Louie got stoned out of his gourd!
