Gearing up for a night on the trail

After an failed attempt at using my old flint stick while I was at the Black Creek Conservation Area, I decided to restock with a more competent stick that I found at Black Creek Outfitters (yeah, its come to be my favorite place to go and peruse around – the women working there are all adorable and the stuff is really useful).

Given how long it took me to chisel the mud and re-polish my boots, I decided to get a more comfortable pair of actual hiking boots (and not my bdu boots) for the trail. Timberland had a nice deal at dick’s on their Conway Trail Mids, they’re comfortable and keep you warm and dry, which is all a guy can ask for.

In regards to the most epic show ever played at the Hampton Coliseum, I managed to locate the show on the ever-so useful Internet Archive, I recommend taking a gander at the darkstar and scarlet begonias.

Florida or Bust

After the awesome concert last friday night, I had a quick rest and did the whole 10 1/2 hour drive down here to Mayport. I managed to evade whatever storms were supposed to come in my path and even with a handful of stops still made the trip under what Google said it would take. The ship isn’t too bad, our space has crystal-clear tv and air conditioning as well as semi-comfortable chairs. The people are pretty close-knit and welcoming, everyone knows everyone. We are still scheduled for a deployment the first week of April and we’re still headed to the South America region, we’re expecting a ton of port visits and days in port. Its taken me a little while to get used to things, but I’m happy to say that my rack is quite cozy (when it does finally get quiet and I’m inside my sleeping bag) and since its a clean berthing it doesn’t have a horrid stench to it. If you try and get a hold of me, most likely I wont get your call (your messages and texts possibly) due to the lack of service inside the ship, but I am able to check my facebook regularly via my phone.

Thanksgiving 09

Getting out of class super early Wednesday I go to hang out with Drew a bit before making the truck up to D.C. for some promising home-cooking brought to us by the wonderful Theresa. After a horrible few hours of Virginia traffic (I hate Virginia, the drivers fucking blow, there’s nothing to do here), I made it through alive and ended up parking in a no-parking zone (I found this out later Friday afternoon). After I got there we ordered some of Al’s pizza and munched on that while Theresa prepared the next day’s meal. Thursday was pretty slow up until the gluttonous feasting of the dead animals, baked goods, and spirits. I believe we almost went through a whole 1.75L bottle of Jose Cuervo and a handful of limes, as well as a half bottle of wine during our little James Bond marathon.

The weather finally cleared up a bit and we got the chance to not only stroll around a few of the monuments, but I finally made it to the famous and elusive Ethiopian place to chow down on some exotic and really awesome food. Every time I’ve gone to D.C. since I’ve been stationed in Virginia (this state fucking blows) I have the Ethiopian place at the top of my list, and every time I’ve left (excluding this last time) its the only thing on my list I didn’t get to accomplish. It was well worth the wait though.

I’ve also gone through about 6 weeks of quite a rigorous lifting routine that involves about an hour of power-lifting and a half hour of cardio every day. There’s a super-neat and useful site out there called BodyBuilding.com, that’s kind of like the ultimate fitness-savvy website. I set up a profile on there that I can use to track my progress and attempt to meet my goal of 16% body fat (bf) by the time I ship down to Mayport.
